A misconception about the application of biocatalysis and enzymes is that rather low concentrations of products are hampering processes. This would mean that the work up is in essence based on the extraction of vast quantities of water to obtain small quantities of product. The lecture will exemplify that this is not the case and that instead high product titers are obtained.

The strategies to achieve this are often base on enzyme immobilization and a combination with follow up reactions, chemical or enzymatic. This then allows the efficient conversion of high substrate concentrations. This, in combination with the use of organic solvent and the application of the enzymes in flow rather than in batch enables huge steps forward. This will be demonstrates with examples of Hydroxynitrilelyase and Acyltransferase catalyzed reactions.
